What is market capitalization?
Market capitalization (market cap) is the total value of an asset. For a company it is the share price multiplied by the number of shares outstanding. For a cryptocurrency it is the price multiplied by the coins in circulation.
How is the market cap of gold and silver calculated?
We multiply the spot price per troy ounce by the estimated amount ever mined and still above ground: about 216,000 tonnes of gold, 1.75 million tonnes of silver, 7,800 tonnes of platinum and 5,400 tonnes of palladium.
How often is the ranking updated?
Every week. The time of the last update is shown at the top of the page. Daily changes refer to the most recent trading day.
Where does the data come from?
Stock prices, market caps and ETF assets come from StockAnalysis.com, crypto from CoinPaprika, precious-metal prices from Gold-API and exchange rates from open.er-api.com. Companies listed outside the US are converted to US dollars.
Why are ETFs in the list?
For ETFs we show assets under management: the total value of all the stocks the fund holds. That makes the biggest index funds comparable in size to the largest companies.
Why do the numbers differ from other websites?
Sources count shares differently, for example for companies with several share classes or listings in Shanghai and Hong Kong. Prices also move all day, so small differences are normal.
